Book Review & Giveaway: Any Size, Anywhere Edible Gardening

Every summer I am struck with “garden envy” whenever I walk into my sister’s yard. Our mother for some unknown reason passed both of her green thumbs down to my sister. Gardening totally baffles me:

How much water? How much sun? What do you mean I can’t grow oranges on Long Island?

Aside from being completely clueless, I don’t have much gardening space. My yard is small at best, and I dedicate the yard space for my kids to run and play. I always assumed that vegetable gardening was not in my near future.

New York Aquarium, Brooklyn, NY

Our kids love animals. They love seeing animals, playing with animals, sleeping with animals – you name it – if it has to do with animals, they’re game. So it’s not shocking that we spend a lot of time at the local game farms, zoos and aquariums on or near Long Island, NY.

One of our favorite places to visit is the New York Aquarium, in Brooklyn, NY. It’s a little bit of a hike for us, so we always head out early, but it’s well worth the trip – especially during the winter months when we’ve been cooped up inside for way-too-many days in a row.

Easy Summer Dessert: Rustic Strawberry Pizza with Sugar Cookie Dough

My Grandfather loves fruit and I like to spoil him with homemade desserts whenever I can. But since he still hangs on to his healthy eating habits even this late in the game, I have to trick him into eating something sweet!

I happened to have a bunch of strawberries on hand that needed to be used up, so I decided to make a super simple Rustic Strawberry Pizza with Sugar Cookie Dough. There’s nothing overly fancy about this dessert, but it’s a really nice twist on some ordinary ingredients that you probably already have in your refrigerator.

Gardening Book Giveaway: Herb Gardening, from Better Homes & Gardens

Giveaway Alert: Better Homes & Gardens new book, herb gardening. Herb gardening is one of my guilty pleasures. Back in the day, when my husband and I were “DINKS” (double income, no kids), I used to plant up potted herb gardens for my lovely staff at K. Van Bourgondien & Sons. I would scour our local gardening centers for my tried-and-true favorites, but then I’d always throw in something flashy or new to keep each basket individualized. My staff loved receiving a gift that could really be used – and I loved making them a heartfelt present.

Our 1920s Tudor Bath – Phase 1 Redesign

6a01348109b26f970c017743773db2970d-800wi

In my previous post, Our Original Mess, we left off with my husband and I wondering what we should do to make our 1920s Tudor bath functional for the time being. One night, we were watching tv. The host, Lisa Laporta, decided to re-glaze the tub and I just knew that this was our answer! We contacted Porcelain Industries in West Islip, NY and they came out to see if they could help us. Luckily for us, our bathroom tile was still well adhered to the wall and they could re-glaze everything!
