My husband and I thought it might be fun to take our kids to Adventureland, a little amusement park on Long Island, NY. We knew the park had a specific area with rides dedicated to young children like ours. On the opposite side of the park they have rides for older kids and adults. We figured it would be a great time. We were right! The kids had a blast and we got some serious heartburn.
My husband and I are very “cautious” parents, but I was surprised to find myself panicking and biting my nails every time my almost 3 and almost 4 year old climbed onto a ride together. I don’t know what I expected. Did I really think the park attendants were going to let me squeeze my fanny onto the flying baby swings so I could hold their hands? Why was I thinking I could fit on that baby caterpillar train anyway? I really couldn’t believe how paranoid I was. My husband was no conciliation to me. He stood at the gate of every ride ready to jump over the fence at a moments notice. He had no intention of telling me to relax, because he was worse off than me.
I know we were insanely neurotic. Mommy and Daddy were the ones that needed a time out that day. But, we are crazy because of our kids. My son climbs over our banister and drops 5 feet to the couch below when we aren’t looking. At least once a week I find my daughter tap dancing on top of her dresser. I have found my son sitting inside our pedestal sink while my daughter gives him a “bath”. My kids will always climb to the highest point of anything they can and jump off. They are absolutely giving us more than our share of gray hairs. They have made us paranoid, but I like to think it makes us better parents.
We will definitely go again when they are a little bit older. The kids really did have a great time. They have a large indoor/outdoor food court where you can sit down and eat, as well as numerous snack vendors throughout the park. There are also plenty of benches and water misting fans if you and your little ones need to sit down and take a short rest. Personally, I would recommend Adventure land to the 4/5 year and older crowd.
