Many years ago, my husband and I took our first vacation together to Block Island, Rhode Island. It was our first big vacation together and I could not wait for it to start. As we boarded the ferry out of Montauk Point, NY, I couldn’t help but notice how windy it was that day. There had been murmurs of a hurricane that may or may not be making it’s way up the coast. We weren’t worried, we would be back home long before that silly little hurricane made it’s way to the Northeast!
As we left the harbor, the waves became larger and larger. The boat was riding up and down the swells like a roller coaster in slow motion. I whispered to my husband (who was my boyfriend at the time) that I was going to be sick. Very, very, very sick. “I thought you grew up on a boat!” was all he could say as he half dragged me to the deck of the boat. Although I did grow up on a boat, I had only been on a boat in swells like that once before…and I got very, very sick.
Amazingly, the fresh air helped and I managed to not throw up in front of him. As I wobbily left the boat, our vacation began and I left the waves behind. We enjoyed 2 gorgeous days on Block Island — one of the most beautiful places that I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. All was wonderful until the third day of our visit. As we rented bicycles and biked around the gorgeous island, it seemed that there was a weird sort of electricity in the air. Actually, that’s putting it mildly – the tourists were freaking out.
As we would pass groups of people, we kept catching the word: hurricane.
Ut oh.
We made our way back to the bike rental and asked what was going on. As it turned out, the hurricane was “probably” going to hit. As shop owners began boarding up their windows and the tourists scurried to the last few leaving ferries – we decided to throw caution to the wind. We decided to rough it out. We still had 2 days left in our vacation and we were in no hurry to return home to our jobs. We were still going to have fun!
And we did! Even though the island was deserted, the few restaurants that did remain open had amazing hurricane parties. We even got to watch the storm roll in from our hotel windows. We were having a great time…until we found out we were stuck. The ferries weren’t going to be returning to the island for a few more days and that’s when we started to panic. We had to get back home – to our jobs!
In the end, it all worked out. We had an unforgettable vacation together, we still talk about it now – 15 years later. We can’t wait to take our kids to Block Island and have another fun adventure with them!
