Can I admit something to you all?

Every once in awhile, my kids’ mobile devices are their babysitter.

There. I said it.

I’m not proud of it, but it’s true.

You see, I’m a work at home mom and sometimes working from home  can be tough. I don’t mean to sound ungrateful because I am very grateful that I get to work out of my home office. But it’s not always as glorious as everyone makes it out to be, especially in summer.

In the summer, my kids want to play with me…all day long. And I think that’s awesome that they still want to play with me, but some days I just can’t play. Some days, I’m on a deadline trying to write something and my kids are annoyed at me for “sitting in front of the computer all day long.” Some days, I have to take a conference call and my kids are going bananas in the background behind me.

On days like these, I lean on their devices. I know. It sucks. But when I have to do it, I try to keep them learning instead of just playing mindless nonsense. This way, come September, they will not have fallen prey to the dreaded summer slide.

If you’re anything like me, you’re also probably wondering which educational programs are the best for young minds to help foster summer learning. To help you out, I reached out to some of the smartest people I know: my friends. They’re a diverse bunch of people and cover all aspects of caregiving: Moms, Dads, Grandparents, Teachers and more. They’ve helped me gather some of the Top Educational Apps For Kids and websites for you to download or bookmark onto your child’s device.

The reality is: we can’t all be Super Stars every single day. So please cut yourself a break and know that your children will not suffer from permanent brain rot from one day of sitting on their devices. With a little planning, you don’t have to feel incredibly guilty when you need to take a call on a busy day. Educational apps are meant to help you and your child advance their different skill sets, so feel confident knowing that you are inadvertently helping them avoid the summer slide.
