I love this time of year: I love lighting fires in the fireplace, I love cooking up rich, wintery meals in the kitchen, and I love the Holiday spirit that seems to be present wherever you go.
However, I also try to remember how very fortunate we are that we have a house to come home to, clothes to keep us warm, and enough food on the table so that our bellies never know what it’s like to be hungry.

To balance out all that I am grateful for in this world, I make sure that I continuously give back to those less fortunate, and I encourage my children to do the same. My kids are still pretty young, but they have a basic understanding of the difference between a “need” and a “want”. So, when I choose charitable activities for us to do together, I just try to keep it simple.
One of my favorite charities is Soles 4 Souls. I’ve written about them before, but I really love that they provide a such basic need to people all across the globe – shoes.

And, it never ceases to amaze me at how easy it is to contribute to Soles 4 Souls. All you need to do is just save your old shoes, and then take them to a drop-off location near you.
So, last weekend, I asked the kids to help me gather up all of our outgrown shoes. It was a pretty easy task for them to help me with because we store all of our outgrown shoes in the front hall closet until we have enough for a sizable donation.

The kids didn’t actually remember the name, Soles 4 Souls, but once I reminded them that they give shoes to people who don’t have any, they got all excited. My daughter looked down at her too-tight Tinkerbell slippers, lifted up her foot, and said, “Like these?” Good job, Baby Girl!
Would you believe that we came up with 17 pairs of shoes?

I was shocked, and the kids couldn’t believe that we filled up two bags for Daddy to drop off at the Rubber Sole Running Company. I was very pleased that we were able to make another donation to Soles 4 Souls, and I hope that our shoes are able to help someone in need of them.
So, if you’re looking for a way to give back, why not think about saving your old shoes and donating them to this great organization?

I’m a big fan! 🙂
They actually have a drop off center in the Greater Albany area…I’ll have to try it. i just donated a bunch of clothes and shoes to the Salvation Army.
