With Christmas right around the corner, I like to start trying new cookie recipes ahead of time. There is nothing worse than bringing your "new" recipe to a party and see people grimace when they take a bite. I had to learn this the hard way. When I first started going to holidays at my then future in-laws I would always bring a big plate of homemade cookies. I was just learning to bake and I wanted to do something nice. I had no idea how terrible they were. Years later I overheard a family member laughing about how awful my cookies "used" to be.
Ouch. That hurt a lot!
At that point I had already become a much better baker, but it still upset me. Going forward I have always tried to learn from the too burnt, too salty, too mushy things I have created in my kitchen. And if I ruin it the first time, I always try again!
I found this recipe for Rich Butter Cookies in my Fanny Farmer cookbook. I really liked it this recipe. The cookies were very easy to make and the kids had a lot of fun putting on the sprinkles!
Ingredients:
1/2 pound butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
2/3 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
Step 1:
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Cream the butter and vanilla, gradually add the sugar and the eggs. Beat well.
Step 2:
Mix the flour and salt together, add to the first mixture and blend together.
Step 3:
Arrange by teaspoonful on the cookie sheet, leave 2 inches between cookies. Flatten them with a knife dipped in cold water. Sprinkle on the sprinkles.
Step 4:
Bake for 8 minutes or until lightly browned.

My Mama, made these cookies every year. Her cookies were the best❤️ I miss her & her Christmas cookies terribly. I was born in the 50’s & have been eating them since then. I also attended Fanny Farmers Cooking School in Boston. It now no longer exists. You can never go wrong w/ any of their recipes. I encourage you to try many more. I have a cook book of theirs that has been oassed down & more than a hundred years old. Happy Cooking & dont let the comments get you down. I look at it that you were sweet enough to make & bring something homemade. That’s a rarity nowadays.❤️
I have been baking these cookies since the 50’s. First with my grandmother, then my children and now with my grandson….they are the best!!
Thanks for stopping by Polly. We love the simple, rich taste! 🙂
