One of the greatest things about crafting with kids is discovering their interests. For a long time now, my son’s favorite animal has been the zebra. Recently, I noticed his favoritism was leaning towards a new animal — the lion…the king of the jungle! At first, the change was subtle. I would find some random lions showing up in his drawings right alongside the zebras. Then I started stepping on Schleich lions in the middle of the night…instead of his favorite zebras – which hurt just the same. Before long, lions became the new favorite and the zebra herd was ousted.

I wanted to support his new found love for lions, but I wasn’t exactly sure of what we should do together. Getting my son to craft with me isn’t always easy. He usually tells me it’s “boring,” but this time, I knew how to grab his attention. After a quick glance in the craft bag, I gathered up some coffee filters, toilet paper rolls, and paint – and I went to find him.

I showed him my supplies and asked him if we would like to build a lion. At first, he was skeptical, but then I showed him how much the coffee filters looked like a lion’s mane when they were all crumpled up. His eyes lit up and before I knew it this coffee filter lion craft for kids was born and we were crafting away.

When crafting with my children, I think it’s very important to sit back and let them create in a way that makes them happy. Even though this may prove difficult at first – especially if the craft does not turn out the way you imagined – all that matters is that it looks the way they imagined it would! With encouragement and patience, your child will always surprise you with their artistic abilities!
