Have you ever wondered what to do with your leftover wine bottles? Our Halloween Wine Bottle craft uses black paint and chalk to create awesome decorations!

The other day, I brought my kids over to my sister’s house. My adorable niece and nephew greeted me at the front door along with their tap dancing dogs. But, my sister was nowhere in sight. I asked my nephew where his mom was and he said, “painting stuff in the backyard.”

It was an odd thing to say, so I sent the kids off to play and made my way to her backyard. I couldn’t help but wonder what in the world was she painting? And, I couldn’t stop giggling at the thought of her sitting in front of an easel wearing a beret and holding a painter’s palette. As I walked into the yard, I kept wondering what inspired her to pick up this creative hobby.

However, the imagined scene in my head turned out to be very, very different from what was really going on out there. As I came out the back door, I found her crouched in front of an upside-down plant stand, wearing a messy bun, holding a can of spray paint. No beret, linseed oil, or paintbrushes in site. Just her and a can of spray paint. Not exactly the type of painting I had in mind.

As I got closer, I was able to see what she was spray painting – three incredibly ugly pots. I asked why she was painting the ugly little pots and she simply said, “I’m going to make them pretty.” I couldn’t believe my eyes and I watched her transform the mismatched pots into beautiful, shiny, white ones.

While I watched her work, my mind started to wander again (it was just that kind of day). I wondered if I could create something like similar for Halloween. I mentioned it to Denine and she suggested spray painting our used wine bottles and drawing on them with chalk.

We rummaged around in her garage until we found a can of matte black spray paint. Then we headed off to her recycling bin, fished out a few empty wine bottles and washed them out. After stealing a few pieces of white chalk from the kids’ chalkboard easel, we were ready to go. I’m pretty sure that this was the easiest and fastest Halloween craft that we have ever created; watching the paint dry was the most time-consuming part of the craft!

how to paint wine bottles for halloween

Materials:

  • 3 empty wine bottles
  • Black spray paint (We used Rust-Oleum High Heat Enamel Spray Paint because that’s what we had)
  • White chalk

Directions:

Step 1: Wash and dry the wine bottles thoroughly.

Step 2: Spray 1 coat of spray paint on the bottles. Allow to dry, apply a second coat.

Step 3: Using white chalk, create Halloween inspired drawings on the bottles. If you don’t like to draw, you can write words like Boo! and Eeeek! on your wine bottles.
