Pancakes, Watermelon and…Sweet Bread?

Messy Kitchen, Watermelon

Saturday morning, I was in a rush. The kitchen was a mess (see above). No one had showered. And, I really needed to get the kids ready, so that I could get the house ready for company.

As much as I really, really wanted to plop down a bowl of  Frosted Flakes at Tyler and Abbey, I reminded myself about my promise. Each week, I would get my kids to try something new – and my week was almost up!

The only new thing I had on hand was some zucchini, but I was pretty sure that pigs would fly before my kids would eat zucchini, so I had to be creative. Hmmm…I had just made some Zucchini Bread: would that count?

On a whim, I told them that I had made some "Sweet Bread" and nonchalantly asked if they would like some. They both looked at me suspiciously, but I simply said that I'd put a slice on their plate and if they didn't want to eat it, they didn't have to. Meanwhile, I got their pancakes, sausage and watermelon ready.

While I was setting the table, I decided to put out some of Miss Amy's Mango Tango Jam. My kids are addicted to her jams, and I thought that maybe they'd be more willing to try the "Sweet Bread" if they could put some jam on it.

Somehow, my plan worked! Well, sort of…

Ty ate two helpings of watermelon, all of his sausage, and an entire piece of "Sweet Bread" – with jam.

But, Abbey just looked at it and frowned. However, she did try watermelon and ate an entire piece – which was a huge breakthrough for all of us!

So, going forward, I think I'm just going to rename every fruit and vegetable in the house…and see where it takes us!

Ha! Thanks – maybe I should see if there really is a job advertising watermelon? 🙂
