Recently, I kept having an unknown number show up on my phone over and over again. I was really annoyed about it. The person kept calling at the same time each night: always when I had my kids in the tub. I couldn’t understand why they just wouldn’t leave a message. I hate when people can bother to call, but can’t be bothered to leave a message.
Was it a telemarketer? Was it a wrong number? Was it Publisher’s Clearing House waiting with a big check for me?
Finally, a night arrived when my husband had the kids in the bath, so I was waiting for them. I snatched up the phone when it rang with this unknown number and very “attitudely” asked who was calling.
It was the War Veteran’s Council.
I felt like a big jerk. A very nice man on the other end was simply calling to see if I had any items to donate, as they would have a truck in my area to pick up any unwanted household items. All I had to do was put my stuff in a box, label it War Veterans Council and put it on my front porch.
I was panicking, wondering if I had anything good enough to give them. Especially after harboring such mean thoughts about the unknown caller status of these guys. As he was talking, I was mentally clicking through things in the basements to give away. I was coming up blank.
(Coming up with things to donate or give away is very difficult for me. Not because of sentimental reasons or attachment issues. It is because my husband is the complete opposite of a hoarder. He loves to throw things out. He actually prowls the house pointing and asking if we can throw things out.)
Finally the man mentioned “books” and “toys”. Yes! Books! Yes! Toys! I have a lot of both!
I marched down to the basement. Grabbed a box and started to fill it. It only took me ten minutes and I had a nice little donation to give to the War Veterans Council. I recently visited their website and found out that you can actually schedule pickups online. They also have a list of acceptable items to donate, just in case you are not sure if your items can be donated. It can’t get any easier than that!
