Over our summer vacation our daughter spotted a kite at the toy store and asked my husband what it was. We thought it was cute that she didn’t know what a kite was. Sometimes parent don’t realize that although little kids have a lot to say, there are so many things in the world that they don’t know about. Like kite flying.
My husband tried explaining to Ava that on windy days you let it fly in the air. She couldn’t understand why or how it could just “fly” in the air. My husband immediately bought the kite and told her we would go to the beach and fly the kite.
We are very fortunate here on Long Island to have very easy access to our seashore. To think we have beaches on both South and North shores of our island is pretty amazing. Robert Moses State Park is one of our favorite places to visit. Before we had children we would take our dog for a long walk on the boardwalk to visit the lighthouse. Now that we have kids we do the same walk with them. We go to the beach, we go to the playground and now we go and fly kites.
The kids were clearly impressed with my husband’s kite flying skills. They didn’t make it easy for him though. Nothing prepares you for having two little kids dive bombing the kite just as it is about to go airborne. Luckily mommy was there to sit on the kids so we could get our kite flying.
I don't know what it is, but there is something really fun and relaxing about flying a kite. You should try it sometime, whether you decide to fly at a beach, a park or your own backyard!
