So, it's been a few weeks since I potted up my Amaryllis and Paperwhite bulbs, and I'm happy to report that they are growing in leaps and bounds! I was a wee bit nervous about how they’d fair because right after I potted them up, we left for a week-long vacation. But, our lovely housesitter watered them for me, and they were nice and healthy when we got home.
As I mentioned previously, I was very eager to try Cornell's experiment about giving my Paperwhites a nip of Vodka to keep them from falling over. They had been growing for approximately 1 1/2 weeks at that point, and had nice green stems on them, so I gave them some watered down Vodka to drink.
It's about 1 1/2 weeks later now, and I must say – their stems are almost as thick as bamboo shoots, and there isn’t a single floppy Paperwhite in the bowl. Apparently, a little booze does a Paperwhite good! But, before you try it at home, read about the necessary vodka-to-water-ratio because too much liquor is never a good thing!
On a more sober note, my Amaryllis are also doing nicely. The stems are tall and strong, and one of them has a beautiful bud that should open any day now. However, since they're not growing at the same rate, they will bloom at different times, but at least I’ll get to appreciate their blooms for a little while longer.
Oh, and before I go — What do Paperwhites really smell like?
The answer is…
Dirty Diapers.
Yep, I said it. If the truth be told, every time I walk into the house, I am accosted by the smell of dirty diapers. It has me so freaked out that I keep checking the changing table just to make sure that I didn't leave one behind.
Overall, these little gems are truly adorable, but the scent leaves something to be desired.
I'll let you know how my Amaryllis grow…
