I was lucky enough to receive the book Curious Critters by David FitzSimmons for a book review. My children and I absolutely adore this book. The book features a variety of animals that are native to North America. Each creature is photographed on a white background which makes them appear to be crawling, jumping, stepping right off the page. My children were absolutely entranced by the detail and quality of each photo.
The critters tell the reader a story from their point of view. My children loved that the creatures were talking to them. This quickly led them to imagine what it would be like to be a brown bat or a red-eyed vireo!
I had saved showing my children this book for a night that we took them out to dinner. Asking a four and five year old to sit through dinner can be a daunting task. When they started to get antsy, I told them I had a very special book to show them.
Their eyes widened as they opened the book to see a Gila monster crawling across the pages towards them. My daughter couldn't believe there was such a thing as a pink lizard! She quickly named the amazing pink cricket (Bush Katydid) as her favorite, with the pink and black Gila monster as the runner up.
My animal obsessed son began naming each creature that he knew. He began excitedly asking "what is this?" to find out the names of the animals he was seeing for the first time. He even held up the book for our waitress to show her his favorite, the Softshell Turtle.
This book will make a wonderful addition to your children's library. You can visit the Curious Critters official website for more information regarding this unique book and the featured animals.
