When my sister and I were children, the first musical we ever saw was The Sound of Music. I have such nostalgia when I think back to watching the Sound of music for that first time. I remember laying by her side with a giant bowl of popcorn, we were hardly able to contain our excitement.
We would playfully argue over who she was and who I was. We would have long conversations about who our favorite character was, Liesl, Lousia, Brigitta… In my heart, I always wanted to be Maria – the amazing Julie Andrews. I wanted to be able to sing like her and make dresses out of curtains! As a child I thought those were two very important talents to have. To this day it remains once of my favorite movies.
I felt that same childhood excitement when my sister told me that Julie Andrews and her daughter had a series of children’s books. We love family teams and I was thrilled when I learned we would have the opportunity to review Graduation Girl! I have a seven year old daughter and I couldn’t wait to share it with her. We spend countless nights reading together with her little brother. Our nights are filled with princesses and knights, mermaids and giants, wild animals and occasionally a wimpy kid.
As I snuggled into bed with my daughter, her eyes lit up when she saw the cover of The Very Fairy Princess Graduation Girl! I really love princesses, she told me. As we took in the beautiful illustrations I knew this was going to be a very special book. The book follows Gerry, a sparkling little girl with some very big concerns about graduation.
I know this book resonated with my daughter who is ending the school year herself. What will her new teacher be like? What if she isn’t nice, like her former teachers? Will she have friends in her class? Will she make new friends? Will the teacher know her name?
Each ending school year can bring concerns and questions for many children. This is a wonderful book to share with your child if they have similar concerns. It will show them that their concerns are important and it’s ok to be nervous. This book has a wonderful ending that will have your children looking forward to meeting their next teacher.
