This unconventional and hilarious new picture book, The Princess & The Pony, from award winning author Kate Beaton, is a “must have” for your home library!
As bloggers, we gets lots of requests from publishers asking us to review copies of the latest and greatest children’s books. To be honest, not all of them are good and they don’t make it on to the blog. We respect your time and your money – so we only bring you things that we love ourselves.
So when we were asked to review The Princess and the Pony from web-comic superstar Kate Beaton, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’m not saying that to be a jerk – it’s just that I was expecting the same old, same old. A little girl wants a pony. Yay.
When the book arrived, I handed it to my daughter and she plopped down on the couch to check it out. Imagine my surprise when I heard her laughing her butt off and squealing to her brother, “Come here!! Come HEEERRREEE! Check out this fat, little pony and its crazy eyes – it’s sooooo cute. And it farts!”
What? A fat pony? A farting pony? A fat, farting pony in a princess book for girls? Now this is my kind of book. I casually sauntered into the room and as I peeked around the corner, they were snuggled together pointing at the pictures and laughing. This was too good to be true – and I totally misjudged this book.
Let’s step back a minute and find out more about this book:
Princess Pinecone knows exactly what she wants for her birthday this year. A BIG horse. A STRONG horse. A horse fit for a WARRIOR PRINCESS! But when the day arrives, she doesn’t quite get the horse of her dreams…
From the artist behind the comic phenomenon Hark! A Vagrant, The Princess and the Pony is a laugh-out-loud story of brave warriors, big surprises, and falling in love with one unforgettable little pony.
How could I have been so wrong? This book wasn’t about an uppity, whiny princess and her gorgeous white mare. No! No, no, no! This quirky picture book is actually about a very unconventional princess that gets an awkward farting pony with wacky eyes and follows them as they work to be the best warriors in their Viking town. Awesome!
Apparently, this Kate Beaton person is really cool and has a great sense of humor. And now I need to go buy the rest of her incredibly funny (and tongue-in-cheek) books because I just can’t get enough – and that’s a huge compliment because I’m a real book snob. I mean nerd. Not snob, nerd.
A trip over to this site led me to an equally good time and I found out that Kate is an award-winning artist known for her hilarious, girl-power comics of historical and literary figures. She is also the recipient of multiple Harvey awards, and her work has been featured in the New Yorker, Harper’s, and The Best American Comics Anthology. In case you need to know, which I did, Kate lives in Toronto and you can find her online at www.beatontown.com and on Twitter as @beatonna.
