Washi Tape Wall Decor: The Eiffel Tower

Do you have a big blank wall in your home that you have been struggling to decorate? I know I do…it’s in my daughter’s bedroom. In her room, the wall across from her bed is a giant blank space. For years, I have procrastinated decorating it due to it overwhelming size.

I have considered large scale art, a photo wall, a chalkboard wall, installing an art cable; you name it and I’ve thought of it. With the wall being across from her bed, I know it is the first thing she sees as she wakes up each morning. So I knew that I wanted something on the wall that made her smile in the morning. Something that reflects her optimism, her artistic nature and her joie de vivre!

As I spent countless minutes (ok, hours) on Pinterest looking for inspiration, I was impressed with all of the beautiful rooms I saw that were decorated with washi tape. It seems like every room in the house can benefit from artfully placed washi tape. As I admired children’s rooms, kitchens and playrooms, I knew that washi tape was the perfect solution to my big blank wall problem.

I quickly got my daughter involved in the design process by asking her if she would like a shape, object or even words displayed on her wall. Without missing a beat she told me: “The Eiffel Tower.” This did not surprise me in the least. She has always been a true Francophile — she loves Parisians, the food, the culture and the City of Lights. There is no doubt in my daughter’s mind that one day she will travel to Paris, study there and even live there.

Suddenly, an 8 foot tall Eiffel Tower seemed like the perfect way to decorate her room! We went to Walmart and picked up some Scotch® Expressions Tapes to create the outline of the tower. Then we used Scotch® Magnetic Tape for the crossbeams, so she would be able to hang her artwork, photos and notes from her Eiffel Tower. I couldn’t believe how much fun we had creating this fun project together!

Whatever your child’s interest may be, the Scotch® Expressions line can help you create simple DIY projects together that reflect their personality and creativity. One of the things that I like best about the Scotch® Expressions tapes is that you can safely and easily remove them from the wall without causing any damage. If you have a child that is obsessed with trains one day, and switches to airplanes the next, no problem. You can simply remove the tape and make a new design!

WASHI TAPE WALL DECOR: THE EIFFEL TOWER

Materials:

  • Scotch® Expressions Tapes (we chose Purple & Purple Glitter tape)
  • Scotch® Create magnetic tape
  • Small magnets
  • Craft knife

Directions: (Please note this was created on a 7 foot tall wall.)

The crossbars: Cut 3 lengths of magnetic tape; 1 – 30 inches, 1 – 18 inches, 1 – 9 inches. These will be the cross bars. Place the smallest length at the top of your wall. Leave room for the 3 inch tower top. Place the middle bar 17 inches below the top bar. Place the bottom bar 25 inches from the middle bar.

The top: Cut a 3 inch piece of tape. Trim the end to make a point, this will be the top of the tower. Attach it to the 9 inch bar.

The outside: Run a length of tape from the tops of the 9 inch bar to the bottom and trim.

The inside: For the middle area, run tape from top to bottom of the middle piece on a slant. Run tape from top to bottom on a slant, connect the open ends with a length of tape. (The shape should resemble a capital A).

The middle crosshatching: Create 4 sets of X’s with the tape. Run the first X from top to middle of the middle section. Create another X shape below it. Make the same design on the opposite side.

The bottom crosshatching: Create 4 more sets of X’s. Start from the top of the bottom section and connect top 2 X’s to the straight bar in the middle of the bottom section. Repeat beneath the top set, connect to sides of the legs.

Voila! Now you can decorate your Eiffel Tower using small magnets and artwork of your choosing!
