Do your kids like to collect things? You know, like rocks? Well, ours do! So the kids came up with these Rock Painting Ideas For Kids. It’s a fun kids craft and you can use your newly painted rocks in the garden or as paperweights!
Our kids are gatherers and tinkerers, and they love walking in the woods and finding all sorts of random things to stuff in their pockets. Sometimes, they find a stick that looks just like a snake. Sometimes, they find a leaf that’s perfect for pressing. Sometimes, they find a really smooth rock that would be great for painting something on it.
I never know what it going to catch their eye when we’re on our walks. After one too many walks that left them with treasures spilling out from their pockets, I decided it would be best to take a backpack with us on our walks. This way, their hands stay free for gathering and their pockets don’t get ripped from sharp objects. Plus, we have a simple family rule – once the backpack is filled to the brim, that’s it. No more treasures until next time.
The backpack idea works for us, but sometimes, we forget to unpack it after a walk. You don’t even want to know what I’ve found in there over the years. But let’s just say that earwigs like to travel in dark backpacks.
On one recent outing, the kids were rock hunting with me. I wanted to make some simple garden markers for my herb garden. I was just planning on writing the names of the herbs in script with a sharpie, but then the kids found out what I was going to do and they took over the project.
If I’m going to be completely honest, I was a little bit peeved because I had a really cool vision in my head, but once I saw them in action, my peevishness faded. They got out the paint, dumped all of the rocks onto the patio table, and started to create these silly little masterpieces. I don’t even know how long it took them to make all of these little dudes and dudettes because I was busy playing with the chickens in the run.
That’s why this painted rocks craft is so much fun. The kids can make whatever their little hearts desire and they all look so stinking cute!
