Our Popcorn Trail Mix Recipe is a perfect snack to take on family adventures. When stored in an airtight container, it will stay fresh for days making it a perfect back to school lunchbox option too!
This time of year is my favorite and it’s not just because the kids have gone back to school! After a long lazy summer, I love that our weekends are once again filled with ballet, swimming, and apple and pumpkin picking. With the cooler weather and shorter days, we find ourselves packing in as much family fun as we can handle. Aside from having the very important job of keeping everyone’s schedules straight, I also become a human snack machine.

It seems that at any given time, there is always a hungry child or adult wondering if I packed any snacks. Did I pack snacks? Is that a serious question? Of course, I packed snacks! There is nothing worse than having a car full of children that can not possibly wait just one more second to eat! I get it, all that running around makes me hungry too! I try my best to be as prepared as possible for our fun filled days. I also try my best to pack healthy snacks that everyone in the family can enjoy.
Believe me, I get it. All of that running around makes me hungry too! So I try my best to be as prepared as possible for our fun filled days and pack healthy snacks that everyone in the family can enjoy.
My favorite snack to pack is my Popcorn Trail Mix. Plain popcorn is a whole grain food that is low in fat and high in fiber. When I start with a healthy snack base, I can then add extras to it and turn it into Mommy’s Popcorn Trail Mix! Popcorn seems to be one of the few snack foods that everyone in our family can agree on, so I make it often.
I also love that I can tailor the snack mixes to suit everyone’s taste preferences. I prefer my popcorn tossed with raisins and pumpkin seeds. My husband prefers his with almonds and cranberries. And the kids love theirs with chocolate chips and peanuts.
On the mornings when I have the time to plan ahead, I have each of them put together their own preferred combination. We wait for the popcorn to cool and then combine all of the ingredients in individual snack bags. On the mornings when time is tight, I just make a combination of ingredients that I know everyone can agree on and toss it into a large resealable bag as we dash out the door.
The best part of making homemade trail mix is that if you store it in an airtight container it will stay fresh for a few days. This makes lunch box packing so much easier during the week.
MOMMY’S POPCORN TRAIL MIX RECIPE
Ingredients:
- Popcorn
- Pumpkin seeds
- Unsalted peanuts
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Sea salt
Directions:
Step 1: Pop the popcorn according to the package directions. Open and allow to cool on a tray. Toss all the ingredients together in an air-tight container and enjoy!
P.S. You can use whichever brand of popcorn you like, but I try to use one that doesn’t contain any artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners or high fructose corn syrup. This way, I know that I am giving my family a snack that is natural and healthy when I use this brand. 🙂
Happy Snacking!

I don’t think I’d want to share this with the kids. I love popcorn and trail mix 🙂 Pinned!
We usually hide in a corner and shove a few handfuls in without them!!
