Over the summer, my kids went bananas when the Minions movie was released in the theaters. We went as a family to see it and as I’m sure everyone will tell you, it was awesome. As parents, we weren’t sure if we would be able to understand what the minions were saying. But the writers did a fantastic job of weaving the minions’ vernacular into both their facial and body expressions — and after the first few minutes, you understand minion-speak completely.
Minions quickly became one of our favorite movies and the kids spent the afternoon discussing which minion was their favorite. To be honest, I still can’t decide who I like the best. Although, I really do love cute, little Bob with his adorable stuffed teddy bear named Tim.
So when we found out that the Minions movie was being released as a Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack on December 8th, we knew we’d be purchasing it for our family home movie collection. (Grab your copy from the Minions movie website here.) It’s one of those super funny movies that you can watch over and over again, which makes it perfect for family movie nights, sick days and car trips! Now that’s our kind of movie! We already love Illumination Entertainment’s Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2 and now we’ll have the whole collection with the addition of Minions © 2015 Universal Studios. All rights reserved.
Since both of our families are minion obsessed, my sister and I decided that we would have a Family Movie Night together. Our kids love our traditional Friday Night Family Movie Nights, but they never get to have them together, unless it’s a sleepover. But since we all love Minions, we decided to make a little shindig out of it. Our impromptu Minions movie party ended up being pretty awesome and it was so easy to pull together that we wanted to share it with you so you can recreate it for your own evil villains and henchmen too!
As we’ve mentioned numerous times before, DIY parties don’t have to cost a ton of money and with some careful planning, you can always create memorable, carefree gatherings without breaking the bank. Our DIY Minions Party Ideas focus on a fun kids crafts, no fuss decorations, and tasty movie snacks that the whole family can enjoy.
DIY MINIONS PARTY IDEAS
DECORATING & FOOD IDEAS
When planning our parties, we’re not really into all of the usual pomp and circumstance that goes with them. Instead, we prefer low key events with subtle nods to the occasion we’re celebrating. So rather than focus our DIY Minions Party Ideas on full blown yellow minions mania, we paid homage to Stuart, Kevin and Bob’s prized possessions instead.
For Stuart, we made a super simple Ukulele cake using yellow store-bought cake mix (because what kind of minion cake would it be if it wasn’t yellow, right?) and covered it in homemade chocolate buttercream frosting (see recipe below). Using some white decorators gel, we added some ukulele strings to it and called it a day! And what goes better with a Ukulele cake than tall glasses of iced cold whole milk? But, to pay homage to Kevin, our kiddos drank their milk straight out of Knights cups decorated with gold and blue faux gems. Cute, right?
We all know that minions stick to a solid dress code of yellow, blue and white, so when planning the color palette for our tablescape, we did too. But when planning a party, you still need to up the “Ahhhhh” factor no matter what the occasion may be. So we took a softer, more natural approach by serving foods that were all yellow and cream in nature, and could be made well in advance…because who wants to be stuck in the kitchen during a party? Not us! With some take-and-go snacks on hand like our gorgeous platter of brie with peach preserves and vanilla pudding cups poured into fancy dishes, there was enough variety for all of our guests to find something to enjoy. We also included lots of other wholesome snacks like Golden Delicious apples, bananas, dried apricots, and an assortment of nuts.
To bring in some blue and white, we set the table with our beloved, all-purpose, white tablecloth. Then we brought out Nanny’s blue and white china. I always love how it looks upon our Mother’s white tablecloth. It’s the perfect mix of fancy and fun! With the addition of numerous mason jars filled to the brim with budget-friendly yellow Alstroemeria, our tablescape was looking mighty fine.
Once we gathered up all of the minion toys in the house and set them amongst the tablescape, we were ready to call the kids in for their pre-party craft!
GAMES & ACTIVITIES
By now you must be asking, “But what about adorable Bob?! Did they forget all about him?” Never fear, my friends. Our beloved Bob is the star of our crafting session. Well, not really Bob, but his beloved teddy bear, Tim, is!
Before the movie night party, we found these incredibly sweet “Tims” online and bought one for each of the kids. They were definitely cute enough on their own, but we thought it might be fun for the kids to make them some clothes before the movie. We simply laid out some brightly colored felt, glue, scissors, and markers – and let them go at it. Their outfits came out adorable and we loved seeing how creative the kids all were with very minimal supervision. The best part was that they got to snuggle with their very own “Tims” while they watched the movie. Awwww! P.S. If your kids aren’t into stuffed animals, you can have them make our awesome minions bank instead!
The kids has a blast at our “extended family” movie night and I think our DIY Minions Party Ideas are pretty straightforward. As long as you always keep your audience in mind — in this case, our kiddos — you will always be able to create something wonderful.
