Moving Forward After Injury

Moving forward after injury can be hard if you don’t address the cause. Ignoring hip and knee pain can prevent you back from enjoying an active lifestyle.

A few years ago I really started to enjoy running. I was looking for a simple form of exercise that would allow me to get out and go when my schedule allowed. I loved the way running allowed me to clear my head and focus on my family, work and myself. At the end of most runs I felt happy, content and ready to tackle my day.

Then I got hurt.

I stopped running, immediately. The pain that occurred for days after a run made it a heck of a lot less enjoyable. Which made me sad, and disappointed in myself. Surely this injury would get better on its own, so I waited and waited and then waited some more.

I didn’t call my doctor. Not when I was no longer able to sleep on my side, due to the pain. Not when I heard sickening squelching noises coming from my hip when I walked up the stairs. Not even when my family members told me I was being a stubborn mule and needed to see a doctor. Nope, I didn’t call my doctor until a year and a half later when I had my physical.

She was not happy with me, not one bit.

I explained I had many reasons why I thought it would be ok. I had told myself it was a natural part of aging, that it would get better eventually. After I ran through my excuses with her, I told her the real reason. I told her I was afraid. Afraid that I would need surgery, or be told I could never run again.

She understood my fear and explained that pain could be a sign that something is wrong. After writing me a script for an orthopedic evaluation, she asked me to make the appointment immediately. And I did, I called and I scheduled my appointment for later this month.

If you find yourself in a similar situation with an injury, it may feel like your life is on “pause”. Hip or knee pain can impact your quality of life. Make the decision to get off the sidelines and “Hit Play” on your life. Talk to a doctor about treatment options, you and your family will be grateful for your decision. Find out more at TimetoHitPlay.com.
