Why Sweating Is Good For Us

Sweating Is Good For Us? After several sweat sessions at the gym, I started thinking about why I sweated so much. Surely, there had to be a reason. This post was developed in partnership with Tom’s of Maine. All opinions are my own. #WhyISwitched #DeoSwitch #ad
Sweating Is Good For Us? After several sweat sessions at the gym, I started thinking about why I sweated so much. Surely, there had to be a reason.
Every Tuesday and Thursday, I rise at 6 am and quietly sneak out of bed. I grab my contacts and gym clothes off of the bathroom counter and quickly sneak down the stairs. I magically avoid all of the creaky spots in our 1920s Tudor and slide into the kitchen without making a sound.
I only have 30 minutes from start to finish to get dressed, brush my teeth, fill my water bottle, and arrive at my local YMCA before the clock strikes 6:30 am, so every second counts. Why the rush? Well, that’s when my trainer starts our strength training sessions and if I’m late, she makes me start with something I despise…so I really try to be on time!

Ironically, it’s these bi-weekly workout sessions that started me on a quest to find a safer alternative to the antiperspirant I have been wearing since I was a teenager. You see, I sweat profusely at the gym and always feel embarrassed, which is why I apply an antiperspirant before I leave the house.

But after several sweat sessions at the gym, I started thinking about why I sweated so much. Surely, there had to be a reason and I had a nagging feeling that I was supposed to let my sweat glands do their thing at the gym. So I jumped online to do some research and as it turns out, sweating IS good for you!

Sweating Is Good For Us? After several sweat sessions at the gym, I started thinking about why I sweated so much. Surely, there had to be a reason.

I always knew that sweating is one of your body’s natural ways of getting the bad stuff out of your body. But what I didn’t know what that when I use antiperspirant, the aluminum in it enters my sweat glands causing them to swell, which then blocks the flow out sweat out of my body. That’s not really a good idea, especially when you’re at the gym trying to sweat the toxins out, right?

So I knew I had to switch things up a bit. Now, I’m not going to lie. This is an ongoing experience for me. It will take some time for me to fully decide if I want to switch over from antiperspirant to all natural deodorant all day long. But for now, I am very happy using Tom’s of Maine deodorant for my early morning workout sessions to ensure that my body reaps all of the rewards of sweating profusely.

Why Sweating Is Good For Us

1.) Increases Endorphins

Exercise and sweating pretty much go hand in hand, right? Well, when you exercise for a prolonged amount of time – like at the gym or running outside – your level of endorphins is naturally released. Why should you care? Because endorphins are the “feel good” hormones and tough workouts trigger their release, which elevates your mood.

2.) Detoxifies Your Body

Sweating is one of the most efficient ways to detox your body. Sweating not only flushes your body free of substances like alcohol, cholesterol, and salt, but it also helps gets rid of the toxins that clog your pores and cause your skin to break out. Enough said!

3.) Reduces the Risk of Kidney Stones.

If you’ve ever had a kidney stone, you know how badly they hurt. You also know that you never ever want another one ever again, right? Well, sweating can actually help you prevent kidney stones. When you exercise, your body sweats out salt while maintaining calcium in your bones which means that they don’t build up in your kidneys and urine, causing stones to form. Plus, when you’re sweating and exercising, you naturally need to consume more water, which is another way to prevent the formation of kidney stones. Bottoms up!
4.) Helps Get Rid of Pimples.
Say what? Yes, it’s true.  Sweating opens up your pores and helps get rid of all sorts of nasties like grease, grime and dirt. As we all know, when these things are left to accumulate, it encourages bacteria to form in your pores, which leads to pimples. But let’s be real – your sweat glands can’t do it all. So after your sweat session, be smart. Take a nice long shower and clean away the dirt and grime before they become embedded in your pores once again.

Why I Switched To Tom’s Of Maine

When it came time for me to switch, I went with a brand that we already knew and loved in our own home. Tom’s of Maine toothpaste and bar soaps have been a part of our lives ever since our daughter developed skin sensitivities to other soap products. We love these products so much that we buy them in bulk so that we’re never without them. My kids happened to have their own Tom’s of Maine natural deodorant and always enjoyed putting it on. My daughter prefers apricot, my son woodland

My kids already use Tom’s of Maine natural deodorant and have always enjoyed putting it on before school. My daughter prefers Fresh Apricot, whereas my son likes Maine Woodspice. So it only seemed fitting that I would follow their lead. I knew it would take my body a little while to adjust to natural deodorant, but I was only planning to switch for my morning workout sessions, so I wasn’t too concerned. Now, I can sweat everything out like I’m supposed to.
