Learning to draw and color should be fun for children…a LOT of fun. Although some children seem to be born with a box of crayons in their hands, some are not. For the little ones that don’t run for their art supplies first thing in the morning, they may need a little extra encouragement.

ENCOURAGING KIDS TO DRAW

Here are a few easy ways to keep encouraging children to draw:

1. Leave art materials where they have open access to them. An open bin of crayons and a stack of paper laying on their play table, will be much more enticing than a box of crayons locked away in a  drawer.

2. Have printables and coloring books tailored to their interests. If you have a boy who is car crazy, a bunch of animal coloring books might not pique his interest.

3. Draw and color with them! Children love nothing more than having their parent’s undivided attention. Sitting and coloring with your children will make them happy – I guarantee it! Your children won’t care that you can’t draw more than a stick figure, all they will know is that you passed the time with them.

4. Try not to correct them. You may be type A and cringe at the thought of them coloring a purple pig instead of a pink pig. Just go with it and have fun.

For my own animal obsessed, farm-loving boy, I found a barnyard themed baking pan to melt broken crayons in. This crayon making activity is perfect for sorting skills and color recognition. Their little fingers will get a healthy fine motor workout peeling the paper off the crayons. My kids really enjoyed peeling off the paper and choosing what colors to make their animals.

BARN YARD CRAYON CRAFT

Materials:

• Broken crayons
• Themed baking pan (animals, letters, shapes)

Directions:

Step 2: Gather up your broken crayons and have your children start peeling. Have them sort similar colors for their crayon shape.

Step 2: Break into small pieces and fill the baking pan.

Step 3: Heat in the oven for 20 minutes at 300 degrees. Let cool. Once cooled, place baking pan in the freezer to easily pop the crayons out of the mold.

Step 4: Ready, set, color!
