Halloween Kids Craft: Fun with Funkins!

We love funkins! Not only do they inspire loads of creativity in our children, but they also make long lasting keepsake decorations for years to come!

I have a secret. And it’s not an Eco-friendly secret. I’m almost afraid to say it out loud because all of my Eco-conscious readers are going to yell at me for it. But,I believe in telling the truth, so I will confess.

I have a serious addiction to…FUNKINS!!! There. I admitted it, and I will not be silenced any longer! That’s right my friends – I am in love with those fake, plastic, flammable, polyurethane foam, carvable pumpkins. How could I, you might scream? Well, simply put – they’re fun, they keep my kids busy on a whim, and there’s no mess involved.

The other day, I used some funkins to let the kids express their artistic sides. My 4-year-old daughter covered her funkin in princesses and butterflies…

…while my 6-year-old son had a blast drawing creepy Halloween ghosts, goblins and vampires on his funkin.

After they were done drawing on their white funkins, we we raided our craft drawer for some pipe cleaners, googley eyes, and pompoms. Then, my super cool son made a black Spider-Funkin all by himself! (I just had to poke the holes for the legs.)

Now, truth be told, I am also addicted to all Harvesty-type events like pumpkin and apple picking, hay rides, corn mazes and so on (just see our Out & About section) – but in a pinch, a funkin makes a terrific kids’ craft. And when you’ve got cranky munchkins underfoot, it’s lovely to be able to hand them a fake pumpkin and let them go to town.

SPIDER FUNKIN CRAFT

Materials:

• Random assortment of Funkins (Michael’s sells them every year)
• Sharpie oil-based paint markers
• Elmer’s glue
• Craft supplies: pipe cleaners, pop-poms, googley eyes

Directions:

Step 1: Decide where you want to place the googley eyes. Secure with glue to the funkin.

Step 2: Next place a pom-pom nose on the funkin and secure with glue. The nose will need to get tacky before it sets.

Step 3: Then, using a white sharpie, draw a fanged mouth on your black funkin. Go over the mouth twice to get the paint to pop.

Step 4: Have an adult poke 8 holes into the funkin for the legs. Place your pipe cleaners into the holes and bend into zig-zags.

Step 5: Step back, admire your work, and put your funkin where everyone can see it!
