Raising Responsible Kids With Chore Charts

Over the summer, I talked about Our Good Deeds Chart and how my husband and I were working really hard on encouraging positive behavior at home with our kids. If you recall, our children have entered the “I’m not touching you, Yes – you are touching me, No – I’m not touching you” stage of siblinghood – and some days, it can really make you bonkers. Our homemade Good Deeds Chart was such a success with both of our kids, that when it came time to start assigning them chores, we knew we would go down the chart path again.

As a visual learner myself, I cannot say enough about the benefits of tacking charts, and lists, and notes to a designated spot in your home. Not only does it help me keep everything organized, but it also lets the kids see exactly what’s expected of them each day. For a little kid, with so many things bouncing around in their heads, it’s incredibly comforting for them to see how each day will unfold.

Filling in the last sticker…on his Good Deeds Chart!

At 5 and 7 years of age, our kids are more than ready to take on some of the easier chores in our household. My husband and I are fairly lenient parents and we encourage our children to make decisions for themselves whenever they can. So when it came time to create their Chore Charts, we sat down over breakfast one Sunday, and asked them to come up with a list of chores that they would like to do.

They were so excited that we were letting THEM decide what chores they wanted to do and they eagerly started filling out their charts. My husband and I sat nearby, supporting, but not interfering, as they told us what their chores would be. When they were finished, we were as proud as proud could be. Not only did they pick out chores that reflected their current interests, like brushing the dogs or taking out the garbage, but they also put down things that they knew we needed them to work at home, like “No Yallin” and “No Instigatin”.

With kids like mine, is it any wonder why I need to do laundry?!

Our Chore Charts have been pretty successful so far, and I think a large part of their success is that we give our kids the flexibility to add or change their chores when they feel like it. So when a box of Tide® Pods and Gain® Flings showed up on my doorstep the other day, the kids wanted to know what they were for…and if they could use them.

I didn’t answer at first because up until then, laundry had been off-limits. I cherish my whites staying white, and my darks staying dark. But I knew that the Tide® Pods and Gain® Flings would be really easy for my kids to use, and if they could help with out with their own laundry, it would go a long way…so I caved.

We went upstairs and discussed how to sort laundry. To keep it interesting, we made a game out of it. My son plays Basketball in our local CYO league, so we learned how to sort whites from colors by shooting hoops with the laundry. After everything was sorted into neat little piles, we headed back downstairs to the basement and continued shooting hoops – only now it was with our Tide® Pods and Gain® Flings.

I couldn’t help but laugh as my kids told their father that “laundry is sooooooo easy to do” and it’s fun too because you get to “fire a pod in the hole, slam the lid, and you’re done”! Needless to say, Tide® Pods and Gain® Flings are a great way to introduce your kids to taking care of their own laundry. Now if only P&G could figure out a way to magically fold the laundry too…

These little pods, available at Target, are super easy for kids (and adults) to use because they take all of the measuring out of the equation. All of the detergent you need for one load of laundry is neatly packed into one little pod. They’re pretty cool and they smell fantastic too!

Denine
