Kids Craft: A Patriotic Wreath

This easy-to-make Veteran's Day craft for kids is a nice conversation starter about why we celebrate the men and women who serve our country. www.weknowstuff.us.com
Although my children are still very young, I felt I should try to teach them about Veterans Day. Of course explaining to a two and three year old why Veterans Day is important wasn’t that easy.

“Do you know what Veterans Day is?”
– “No, is it my birthday yet?”
“Um, soon. Do you know why Veterans Day is important?”
– “Why is it important? Do you want to see which square my birthday is on (on the calendar)?”
“Veteran’s Day is when we give thanks to all of the people that keep our country safe.”
– “Like Thanksgiving?”
“Yes, like Thanksgiving for the military.”
– “Ok.”

I thought I might be able to talk a little more about Veterans Day while we sat down and did a patriotic craft together. I told them we would hang the star wreath on the door for Veterans Day as a way to say thank you to our soldiers. It is a hard concept for little kids to grasp, but sitting down with them gave me the chance to think about how “thankful” I am for the men and women that have served and continue to serve our country. Thank you!

KIDS CRAFT: A PATRIOTIC WREATH

Materials:

  • Construction paper: Red, White and Blue.
  • Thin cardboard or heavy card stock
  • Glue

Step 1: Make a circle with a circle inside. I used a pot lid to trace and then a smaller bowl to trace the inside circle.

Step 2: Draw a star shape. Use this for your template. Cut square and stack so you can cut more than one star at a time.

Step 3: Let kids paint the wreath with glue and stick the stars on. Let dry. Glue a piece of string or yarn to the back for hanging the wreath.

Thank you,

Daniele
