Once upon a moon ago, I was fighting with my middle school friends. Although I don’t remember what the fight was about, I do remember being very upset about it. I was crying to our Mom and was dramatically telling her that if we all didn’t make up, I’d never have any friends again. I remember her listening to me, nodding her head at all of the appropriate times, and then hugging me when I was done.

As I climbed onto our large sectional and wrapped myself up in a blanket, she disappeared down the hallway. To be honest, I was a bit miffed. I thought she’d bring me a cup of hot chocolate and some cookies. But when she returned, she handed me a dusty, old book instead.

When I looked up, she said,

“As long as you know how to read, you’ll never be alone.”

Then she went into the kitchen to make dinner and left me alone with my thoughts and her random book. In that moment, Mom gave me the greatest advice of all time. And, I understood it right away. For some of the greatest, most interesting people we have ever known are found within the pages of old, dusty books. ♥

What a great gift. I would love these stories for my niece and nephew who are reluctant readers when they visit.
