Dessert recipes don’t always have to be so fussy. Come September, we’re all about these Easy Caramel Apples; our kids love pressing toppings on to them!
Caramel Apples are a weakness of mine. Come Autumn, I crave them constantly. The simple pairing of golden caramel candies with nice, crisp apples is a treat that I cannot live without – and rarely do.
Luckily for me, my daughter is back on her “Apple Kick” so we have lots of apples in the house right now. Unfortunately, she only takes a few bites of an apple and then hands it over to me to finish eating — because nothing says, “I Love You Mom,” like a spit-covered, half-chewed apple.
So after finishing yet another one of her apples yesterday, I decided that it was time for me to enjoy an apple MY way – covered in caramel and finely diced walnuts! My kids were both at school, so I used my time wisely and was able to make a nice batch with all sorts of toppings.
Caramel Apples are relatively easy to make – but in order for the toppings to stick, they must be pressed into the caramel right away because it sets rather quickly. Enjoy!
CARAMEL APPLES
Ingredients:
- 5 apples (1-1/2 lb.), washed, well dried
- 1 pkg. (14 oz.) KRAFT Caramels
- 2 Tbsp. water
- 5 Wooden pop sticks
- Toppings: sweetened, flaked coconut; semi-sweet, chocolate minI-chips; diced walnuts; etc.
Directions:
Step 1: Insert wooden pop sticks into stem ends of apples. Cover a large plate with wax paper and lightly spray with cooking spray.
Step 2: Cook caramels and water in large saucepan on medium-low heat until caramels are completely melted, stirring constantly.
Step 3: Dip apples in caramel, turning to evenly coat. Spoon additional caramel over apples if necessary. Scrape excess caramel from bottoms of apples. Immediately roll apples in toppings.
Step 4: Place apples on greased tray and refrigerate for 1 hour. Remove from refrigerator 15 minutes before serving; let stand at room temperature to soften slightly. Refrigerate leftovers.
Note: If the apples you purchase are waxed, be sure to wash the wax off completely before dipping apples in the melted caramels!

@Pink Lady – I was going to make them with my kids, but I’m glad I didn’t. They’re still too young for the HOT caramel. You really have to roll the toppings fast – and I would be nervous that their little fingers would get burned. The “nachos” sound fun – I actually had a picture of them sliced up – but I didn’t post it. I find caramel apples MUCH easier to eat when sliced! 🙂

I made candy apples years and years ago with my mom, I would love to make some caramel apples with my boys, not sure they could handle it yet… I saw these candy apple nachos… Lol… Sounds gross, it’s really just sliced apples with toppings drizzled and sprinkled over top. I think munchkin could handle those… Maybe.
