DIY Halloween Banner: Made From Recycled Books

This DIY Halloween banner uses the pages of old books and turns them into a cool keepsake decoration. Homemade holiday decorations make great gifts too!

During Hurricane Irene, I hadn’t noticed that a few of my books had fallen behind a table in my basement. I discovered them after when we were mopping up the rainwater that had gotten into our basement. I hate throwing out books, I try to donate them whenever I can.

Unfortunately, the books were beyond donating. I knew I wouldn’t feel too bad about them if I could find a way to recycle them. With Halloween around the corner, I knew I could make a Halloween Banner by using the pages that weren’t entirely waterlogged. If you are looking for a quick and easy Halloween craft, this one might be for you!

DIY HALLOWEEN BANNER

Materials:

  • 1 damaged book
  • 1 sheet of black letter stickers
  • ribbon
  • glue
  • tape

Directions:

Step 1: Pick the best book pages and draw a circle on them. You will need 28 circles; 14 for the front of the banner and 14 for the back. Your circles should all be the same size, so either use a glass as a template or a craft punch for the circles. Cut the circles out.

Step 2: Place your letters on the first 14 circles to spell out “Happy Halloween”.

Step 3: Layout your ribbon so you can glue the circles to it. The plain circles will be the backing to help sandwich the ribbon between the two cut out circles.

Step 4: Make sure you lay out your letters correctly BEFORE you glue. I learned the hard way, as my sister peeked over my shoulder and said:

“Are you sure that’s right?”

“Yeah, uhhh I think so?”

NO NO NO. SO not right!

Step 5: Glue the ribbon between the circle, let dry. You can either end the ribbon at the last circle or extend it if you would like to hang the banner. (I taped mine to a mirror.)

So much to love about this idea! In fact, I’ve shared it all over the place. 🙂
