We love birds, so it should come as no surprise that we created a fun, kid-inspired list of nature crafts and National Bird Day Activities for you, right?
My sister and I love birds. We love the sound of their chirping in the morning. We love watching them make little nests in our yard. And we love watching them eat from our homemade bird feeders.
It might sound very Pollyanna of us, but our love of birds comes from our parents. During our childhood, our mom raised finches for quite some time, and after the mass of finches came the parakeets: Sunny (the mom), Sky (the dad) and Kermie (the baby). Let’s just say we weren’t very original – the parakeets were named because of their beautiful colors! 🙂
Our father also enjoyed birds, but he preferred the outdoor kind, especially Cardinals. He used to set up a Christmas Tree – just for the birds – out on our back deck every year when we were kids. Being the avid fisherman that he was, he got a real kick out of using only red and green lights on the tree. But, being the cool Dad that he was, he let us decorate it with all sorts of gaudy popcorn and berry garland, peanut butter apples, and bacon-fat birdseed balls.
Now that we’re Moms, we try to instill a love of birds, and nature in general, within our kids. It’s not as hard as it sounds – we just try to be thoughtful of all of God’s creatures, and creations, as often as possible. So, we like to do a lot of Nature-inspired crafts with our kids to subtly drive home the idea that everything has a purpose in life.
Some of our favorite Nature-related Kids Crafts appear below. They’re relatively easy to do, they recycle common household goods, and they won’t take up much of your time. However, the joy on your children’s faces – as they watch the birds and squirrels flock to your yard to dine – will last a lifetime.
