Now that my children are pre-school and school age, I am amazed at how much busier our lives have become. The weeks are filled with school, volunteering at school and homework. Our weekends are filled with ballet, swimming, gymnastics, birthday parties and recitals. We love nothing more than watching our children grow, thrive and participate. All of this makes for a never-ending busy schedule.
Lately, I have been feeling the need to scale back a little on all of the activities. As parents we often say yes, before we say no. The result of this is often a hectic and overflowing calendar. Many days I feel like a crazed border collie trying to herd the sheep of commitments. Sometimes I can manage to herd everything together and into the pen, but it can be overwhelming.
I think it is important for parents, especially mothers to really examine all of the commitments you are agreeing to. Personally, I feel guilty – I don't want the kids to miss out on anything. Unfortunately, that means we are running a marathon of events all week and weekend long.
Where do you find time for family time?
I decided it was time to commit to some "family" rituals. Rituals that shouldn't be compromised, as they help us bond and grow together as a family.

Dinner together every night. Bed time stories snuggled together each night. Time on the weekends for the playground, the park or a long walk in the woods. Maybe even a movie together on the couch after a long day of play.
Sometimes the more simple the family ritual, the more enjoyable it can be. In this busy world you really have to force yourself to slow down and enjoy your family to the fullest.
