Our kids picked the books for this Best Book Series For Kids Gift Guide. It’s full of their favorite selections and as long as they’re reading, we’re happy.
In our home, Santa is in charge of overseeing the children’s “Wish Lists”. He goes through each and every item, and then somehow he makes a decision about which gifts he will bestow upon our children on Christmas Day. I don’t really know how he does it, so I just try to stay out of Santa’s way.
Instead, I focus on the more practical gifts. I get to buy toothbrushes and toothpaste (because no one likes dirty teeth), I get to buy new socks and underwear (because going commando is never an option in school), and I get to buy books…lots and lots and lots of books (because books are the most practical gift of all!!).
Being an English major in college, I adore books.
The smell of them. The feel of them. The look of them.
And, I don’t ever read on a tablet – I only read real books.
I read by a lamplight. By firelight. By flashlight.
But I always, always read under a thick, fuzzy blanket.
And it is my insane love of books that brings us to today’s Best Book Series For Kids (Ages 6-8) Gift Guide. The books listed below are not of our choosing – they are our children’s favorite selections. And if there is one thing that we, as parents, never try to do – it is to tell our kids that their choices aren’t valid. For each of us have our own interests and appetites when it comes to literature, and as long as they’re reading voraciously, we’re happy.
Update: This post was originally crafted in 2014. At that time, we partnered with Candlewick Press, an independent children’s publisher, and hosted a lovely giveaway for our readers. The giveaway has long since ended, but we highly recommend that you check out these amazing books: Animalium, The Fairy Tale Handbook, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Just Right For Christmas, and Before After.
There are some great books on this list! We love the Never Girls and The Magic Treehouse in our house!
I don’t know all the books in your list but I see some of our favorites. My 7 year old is reading Amelia Bedelia in school and she loves Junie B. June. I love to hear her read them 🙂
I love the smell of books too! My fave childhood book is Where the Red Fern Grows.
My son is 5 and he likes many of these. Although Junie B is a bit to whiny and mischievous for my tastes. He LOVES the magic tree house series!
I loved The Boxcar Children growing up!
I needed this list. My kids like to read… but only “certain” books. I’m going to try a few of these!
Thank you, thank you, thank you…I love to give gifts of books. I think reading is so important. We taught my son early to enjoy reading. Read to him every night. We think that helped with his progression through school.
I think books are a great gift!
Thanks for this list, I need to get my son some books for the holidays. He’s totally obsessed with reading.
those are great choices. I have to add a few to our shopping list
Oh thank you for this! My daughter is 7 and I have been looking for book ideas!
Books are ALWAYS big hits in our house! My daughter has almost all of the Wimpy Kids books, and a few other series as well. I’m going to check out the Never Girl books because they look like a series GIdget would be interested in.
I’ll keep these in mind for the future. My daughter is almost 8, but has delays.
Those are some great picks! I have several books I want to buy my daughter for Christmas this year!
My favorite is the hungry caterpillar! It’s also the first book my son learned to read. 🙂
Books are huge in our house and one of my favorite things to gift or receive. My oldest loves the Magic Tree House set and has just moved onto Beverly Cleary books. His favorite it the Mouse and the Motorcycle.
I love the smell, feel, and look of books too. I tried having a Nook to read on for a while, but it just wasn’t my thing. I love feeling a book swell then shrink in my hands and the feel of the pages beneath my fingers. My children always get books for Christmas and I hope they are all avid readers like me.
Any book roundup looks good to me! You have great selections here!
I was such an avid reader as a kid. I collected so many, and probably read 3 books a day at one point. I LOVED reading!
My kids read some of those books when they were little! Wow I definitely remember Captain Underpants.
My son is 6 and reading at a 3rd grade level. It is hard to find him books the are age appropriate, fun for him and challenging at the same time. I would love to win this fir him.
I loved Amelia Bedelia growing up! I have read a couple of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books, just to see what they were about (that’s the educator/preschool teacher in me lol). My son is 4, but I think he’d enjoy listening to some of the books already.
My 8 year old is starting to want to read more and more. Gradually, I’m rediscovering some of my old childhood favourites too!
Thanks for the giveaway! My oldest is just now into books and loves the ones with chapters. I need to keep these in mind for gifts for her.
I love books! Just like yourself I can’t get enough! My favorite book is green eggs and ham and for six years I’ve been pretty good to read it to my six year old son but now he reads it to me and I love it!
My boys LOVE Diary of a Wimpy Kid! Those are all great choices for kids!
I love that I’m not the only mom that gives books at Christmas time. The Magic Treehouse series is our family favorite right now.
I agree, books are a great gift!
Those are some great picks for kids books! I certainly love and adore the Amelia Bedila series! So funny!
