Once upon a moon ago, back when He-Man and She-Ra ruled, and Jem really was truly, truly, truly outrageous, and Smurfs and Snorkles seemed completely realistic, my siblings and I would devour cereal on rainy Saturday mornings while our parents slept in. We grew up in an era when parents very rarely let their kids park it on the couch, so we relished these moments. We would help each other climb onto the counter to grab the cereal bowls and then eat at the little tv table in front of the couch.

I miss those days. I miss the pure simplicity behind eating a bowl of your favorite cereal with your best friends, in my case, my siblings, sitting alongside me. I miss laughing so hard – with mouthfuls of Cheerios – that we would end up spitting milk everywhere – and coughing up lungfuls of half-chewed up bits across the table. I miss sitting in my pjs until our parents woke up and told us to “go do something” which meant “put your clothes on and go outside before you rot your eyeballs out”.
Now that I have kids of my own, I try to help them make their own special memories. Memories like I have with my siblings, but memories that are just for them. As I sit here typing my morning post, I can hear them playing in the next room. They are wrestling and in between their laughing screams, I hear them making memories. I love that. They don’t need me to stand beside them and force them to be friends – they are perfectly happy doing it on their own.

Like Mom, I also leave boxes of their favorite cereals on the lowest shelf of our pantry so that they, too, can help themselves to a bowl of cereal on Saturday mornings. My husband and I are pretty early risers, so we’re usually up with them, but I like giving them independence. I like giving them opportunities to work together to achieve a goal. My daughter is way too small to get milk out of the fridge, so I often catch my son getting the milk while she gets the spoons. It’s adorable. I love it. And I stay out of it.
Anyways, my kids are pretty gosh darn excited about the new Minions movie — who isn’t?! And when they caught sight of their beloved Minions on these family-sized boxes of Honey Nut Cheerios the other day, they just had to bring some boxes home. It’s not often that you can find toys in cereal boxes anymore – and they are pretty excited about being on the hunt for the 7th Minion. So what do Saturday mornings look like at your house? Do your kids watch some cartoons? Do they help themselves to breakfast? Let us know. 🙂
