The older my children get, the more I find myself worrying if they are eating enough food during the day. This year, both of my children’s lunches occur late in the afternoon and even though they have a mid-morning snack at school, I’m always concerned that they might be hungry before lunchtime comes.
Even though I pack their lunches myself and know that I’ve packed enough food for them, I still get concerned about whether or not they’re actually eating all of it. Or are they having so much fun at school chatting with their friends that they’re running out of time before they’ve finished their meal?
With so many what-ifs, I like to make sure that they are well-fed before they go to school each morning. This way, even if they don’t eat all of the food I’ve sent with them, I know they started their day off on the right foot. I know that if I send my kids to school with a full belly, they will be able to concentrate more in class instead of being distracted by their grumbling bellies.
With two, active, school-aged children, our mornings can be a bit chaotic. My children don’t like to be rushed and if I don’t watch the clock carefully, our mornings can get way off track. We have back packs to pack, lunches to make, clothes to put on and breakfast to eat.
To make mornings easier for us, I always have a steady supply of Eggo waffles in our freezer. They’re the one breakfast that they both agree upon and I can dress them up in a variety of ways. Some mornings, I quickly cut up an assortment of fresh fruit and serve them a fruit salad of apples, grapes and bananas to eat alongside their waffles. Other days, they make peanut butter and jelly waffle tacos and eat them on the go. And on mornings when all is going well, and they have a few extra minutes, they like to decorate their waffles and create funny faces with them.
With Fall fast approaching, they are very into making Halloween type creations. In the past week, we’ve eaten a bat, an owl and Jack-o-lantern too! Through trial and error, I have found that peanut butter is the best “glue” in town when working on your food art creations!
So what do you do to keep your children’s mornings running smoothly?
FUN WITH FOOD: HOW TO MAKE AN OWL WAFFLE
Ingredients:
- 2 waffles (Target always has a great selection of flavors, use your favorite kind!)
- Peanut Butter
- 1 banana, sliced into disks
- Raisins (or any small dried fruit)
- Watermelon
- Maple Syrup
Directions:
Step 1: Toast waffles according to directions. Leave one waffle whole, cut the second waffle into quarters.
Step 2: Place the whole waffle onto the center of a plate. Take two quarters of the second waffles and place them next to the whole waffle. (See picture above.) These will be the wings.
Step 3: Place a small dollop of peanut butter on the back of two banana disks and place them at the top of the waffle as eyes. Smear some more peanut butter on the back of two raisins and affix them to the banana disks to make the Owl’s pupils.
Step 4: Cut three small triangles out of watermelon for the ears and beak. Put some peanut butter on the watermelon pieces and place them on the waffle.
Step 5: Take six raisins and use them to make two, three-toed feet for your Owl.

My kids would love this! I really want to do a doodling with food story and include stuff like this! Cheers from kid can doodle
That sounds like fun! Our kids loved creating their waffle animals.
I know those owl waffles are kid-themed, but I kinda wish they would land on my breakfast plate, too! Thanks for sharing! #client
