It should come as no surprise that Valentine’s Day is one of her all-time favorite holidays. She makes Valentine’s for everyone in her class, everyone in her family, and this year – every dog she knows. I am not kidding. Last April, we welcomed a puppy into her home and according to my daughter, this will be her first official Valentine’s Day.

Early one Saturday morning, she told me she was ready to make our pup her Valentine’s gift. I gave her full reign in the craft closet and sat back eager to see what she would come up with. She pulled out a mini burlap bag (no idea where it came from) and a bin full of paint. She was going to make her pup a dog treat bag, so whenever we travel we could have a stash of biscuits for her.
I asked her if she would be interested in learning how to make potato stamps. She had never heard of them before, so I dashed into the kitchen pantry for some potatoes. This is a really fun project for both little kids, big kids, and moms. (For small children it is best to cut their design for them, use your judgment on whether your older child can safely handle a small knife.)

Potato Stamp – Dog Treat Bags
Materials:
- 1 medium potato
- Small Paring knife
- Pen or marker
- Paint
Directions:
Step 1: Wash your potato and cut in half. Dry the cut side with a paper towel. Have your child draw their design on the cut side.
Step 2: With the paring knife, trace their design down into the potato about 1/4 – 1/2 inch. Carefully cut from the outside in to remove the part of the potato that is not the design.
Step 3: Have your child dip the potato into the paint and firmly press down on anything they feel like stamping!

This is so cute! I love crafting with my kids (they are still pretty young but love to get creative). And it is so sweet that she wants to give her puppy a valentine.
The girls always give their puppies Valentines. It’s adorable!!
How cute are those??? What a fun idea.
Thanks Sarah – the girls love their dogs!! 🙂
