I have to admit, I was shocked when I saw giant heart-shaped boxes of chocolates lining the shelves for Valentine’s Day. Normally I don’t find chocolate offensive, but the day after New Years? I couldn’t believe my eyes.

I had barely recovered from the whirlwind of Christmas and New Years and now I had another holiday staring me down? The funny thing is I was just getting used to the fireplace mantle being nice and clean!

But instead of feeling anxious, I simply decided to take the hint. I would take all of the chocolates and decorations as a big, fat sign to stop procrastinating.

So, instead of waiting until the day before Valentine’s Day to decorate this year, I was going to start decorating now…smack in the middle of January!

Armed with a schlew of crafting ideas in my head like this simple paper heart decoration, I decided to pick up some simple materials to get the ball rolling. This year, I am getting a jump on the festivities and I think you should join us!

So, if you find yourself feeling extra Valentine-y, grab your kids and sit them down to decorate their own adorable hanging heart decoration for their door. I promise they will smile every time they walk past it!

Hanging Heart Decoration

Materials:

  • Wooden heart shape
  • Tissue paper (red, pink, orange etc.)
  • Elmer’s white school glue
  • Ribbon or vine
  • Glue gun

Directions:

Step 1: Cut the tissue paper into 1 inch by 4-inch strips.

Step 2: Pour Elmer’s white school glue into a shallow dish. This will make it easier for little fingers to dunk their tissue paper into.

Step 3: Have your kids squish up the strips of tissue paper one strip at a time. Have them dunk it into the glue and firmly press onto their wooden heart shape.

Step 4: Heat up your glue gun and make sure that little fingers are far away from you and the hot glue. Make a loop with either ribbon or vine and hot glue it to the back of the heart. Allow for it to dry.

Step 5: Hang it!
