This winter I fell into a big, old, sad style rut with my daughter. She has extremely long and curly hair that requires my help styling it each morning before school. But at some point over the winter, maybe when the mornings became so dark and cold, we changed our styling routine. We passively let the “hair styling” part of our morning get pushed to the end of our very busy morning.
As one can imagine, trying to tackle my daughter’s “mermaid hair” minutes before running out the door each morning was a solid recipe for disaster. More often than not, our mornings were ending in tears and frustration for both of us. It was not the perfect start to either of our days. In fact, it was a pretty terrible way to start the day. One particular morning after I dropped her off at school, I found myself trying hard to figure out where I was going wrong.
You see, I have pin straight hair and I have spent the past 29 years trying to figure out how to add volume, waves and curls to it. So when my daughter inherited her father’s beautiful, bouncing, corkscrew curls, I was at a loss with how to manage it. Over the years, I’ve done extensive research on the subject of curly hair. Sounds wacky, but it’s true. My daughter’s her is gorgeous, but I’m often very confused by it.
When she was itty bitty, I started watching how-to videos about styling curly hair and even began interrogating curly-haired strangers. I also spent a lot of time reading the packages of styling tools and hair products. You would think that by now I would have had it all figured out, but I still struggle some days.
As I thought back over the years and tried to figure out how to eliminate frustration and tears from our morning, it came to me.
Time.
More time is what I needed to style her hair properly each morning.
I mean it makes perfect sense. When my daughter was very young, I would spend a lot of time experimenting on her hair. While she sat and watched her favorite tv show, I would see how her hair could be braided neatly, what rubber bands didn’t pull her hair, and most importantly, how she liked having her hair done.
Fast forward a few years and I am no longer dedicating those precious moments to her. I wasn’t giving her the time we needed to calmly style her hair without tugging, pulling and muttering under my breath. Instead, I had unwittingly turned what used to be our shared time together into a chore.
With the arrival of Spring, I decided I wanted to change this bad habit of rushing and pushing her hair into a “good enough” ponytail. I knew I needed to reset our morning routine so I decided to block off a solid 10-15 minutes each morning to ask her what she wanted us to do to her hair. I made a commitment that I would make myself slow down and enjoy my time with her as I slowly and calmly untangled her curls. Doing her “mermaid hair” was going to be fun again for both of us.
I knew what products worked for her and exactly where I could find them in at my local Target, so after dropping her off at school, I went shopping. In my daughter’s opinion, the only rubber bands that don’t pull her hair or get tangled up in her wild curls are Goody’s Ouchless Elastics. So if I ever had any hope of bringing her hair back to life this Spring, I was going to need some new styling tools and accessories for her. I spied the Goody Ouchless Brush and after reading about its FlexGlide Bristles that are strong enough to get through matted and messy hair, but gentle enough to work through tangles without pain, I knew this was the brush for my daughter and me! I also stocked up on the Goody Ouchless Elastics because they truly are our favorite as they always keep a comfortable, secure hold on her ponytails.
We’ve been having a blast trying out new hairstyles together and we’ve even convinced my sister to try some new “dos” on her daughter too. We’d love to know about the type of hair that you deal with at home. Do you struggle with curly hair? Or is int pin-straight? Do you have any tips and tricks to share with us?
