Now that school is coming to an end, our children’s schedules have finally started to free up. I love being able to take my children to all their after-school activities, but sometimes I miss the freedom we had when they were young. We could pack up at a moment’s notice for an impromptu trip to Grandma’s, a swim at the beach, or for a picnic in the park.

Our days are much more structured now that they are older, and spontaneity is best left for weekends. Which is why I am thrilled that their time after school is becoming less planned and organized! My mother is blessed to be surrounded by grandchildren that absolutely adore her. Rarely does a day go by that they don’t ask when they get to see their Grandma.

They love to celebrate her and often think up elaborate ways to entertain her when we are together. The boys often spend their afternoons playing hide and seek with Grandma acting as the facilitator, telling them if they are hot or cold in their quest to find the cousin in hiding. Her granddaughters rummage through her closets coming up with extravagant costumes for their fashion shows, with Grandma having the honor of being the judge.

My sister and I have now made it a weekly tradition to visit our mom during the school week with the kids. They get to unwind after school at their Grandma’s and fill her in on their daily goings-on. This past week we decided to have an ice cream party, and create easy ice cream trifles with Edwards S’mores and Turtle Crème Pies. Edwards pies are the perfect addition to any impromptu get together!

This is a fun and easy treat to make on a hot day. Edwards® pies are fresh from the oven with cookie crumb crust. Each dessert is filled with velvety layers of sweet cream and dusted with decadent toppings. All meticulously whipped, toasted, sprinkled and drizzled to ensure excellence in every delicious bite. Our kids loved being able to choose their favorite pie flavor from our local Walmart, and choose their desired add-ons (such as whip cream and pound cake) for their very own trifle dessert.
