Halloween has been one of our most favorite holidays ever since we were kids. I think it’s a combination of the nip in the air that slowly creeps upon us, the excitement of dressing up as a family in costumes, and the togetherness we share while carving pumpkins. This is why we spend lots of time coming up with new Halloween Snacks (like this barfing pumpkin) and special Halloween Crafts to do with our kids.
Our Fall Harvest Fun typically starts with a trip out east to go apple picking. We’re very lucky to have several apple orchards to choose from on Long Island. And, with an abundance of varieties available for picking, we really could go apple picking more than once — and sometimes, we do! After we’ve used up all of our apples in an array of tasty treats (like Apple Cider, Apple Jam, Apple Nut Bread and more!), we then focus on decorating our home. Before you know it, it’s time to go pumpkin picking and start planning all of the tasty things we’ll be eating while we carve up our pumpkins.
One of my all-time favorite recipes is our Mom’s Crab Dip, to be served only with Wheat Thins. (I’m not kidding – don’t bother to use anything else because our Mom will hunt you down and scold you. It just doesn’t taste the same with any other cracker!) This dip is so delicious that guests often park themselves by the table and don’t leave until it’s gone. Since it’s a family favorite, I often make more than one batch to send home with my siblings for them to enjoy later on. Come the holidays, everyone always asks us to bring it as an appetizer, and since it’s so easy to make, I never say no!
Since our families always go trick-or-treating together, we’re currently busy planning our costumes and the menu for our after-party. After the kids have had their fill of running around in the chilly Autumn air, we’ll bring them back home to my house for dinner. To keep things easy, we’re just planning to serve an assortment of “apps and snacks” – like our Mom’s Crab Dip. The best part about this recipe is that you can make it ahead of time and then just warm up in the oven right before guests arrive.
Although this cake may look complicated to make, it’s not. I simply used this super cool Skull Cake Pan, our Banana Cupcake recipe, and some Halloween Oreos to make it pop! Easy peasy!
