These adorable Clam Shell Friends are one of our favorite summertime crafts. We live by the ocean, so we’re always looking for more shell crafts for kids!
If you live down by the sea shore, like we do, your kids are bound to leave the beach with at least one backpack full of clam shells each visit. As our pile continues to grow, week by week, I’m often desperate for new ways to use them up.
So after my husband and the kids painted me my very own “Mother’s Day Clam Shells” – I swiped his idea and made some Clam Shell Friends with the kiddos this afternoon. It is a fairly easy craft to do, especially with younger kids – all you need is an abundance of clam shells, some paint, a package of googly eyes, and some spray varnish!
Once our Clam Shell Friends are good and dry, the kids like to hide them among the gardening beds. You never know when you’ll happen to spy one and it’s become a pretty fun way for them to add their own personality to the yard!
CLAM SHELL FRIENDS: SHELL CRAFTS FOR KIDS
Materials:
- Clam Shells
- Googley Eyes
- Paint
- Glue
- Spray Varnish (I use washable paints – so the varnish is necessary to keep the colors on the shells!)
Directions:
Step 1: Wash and dry your clam shells. Paint; allow to air dry.
Step 2: Once paint is completely dry, have an adult spray varnish over them to keep the paint from washing off.
Step 3: Once varnish is dry, glue on googly eyes.

Love nature crafts? We have tons of them to explore:
This is a seriously cute idea! I’m going to have to do a little research on where I can find some clam shells here in the desert, but I’m sure I can find some somewhere. Maybe I can ask a seafood restaurant or something? Anyhow, my girls would love this, they are obsessed with sea shells and mermaids, and I think this will be a great summer day craft!
A seafood restaurant would be a great place to ask! Maybe they could search for rocks that “look” like shells. Our little girls love all things mermaids too 🙂
This is such a cute idea!
Thank you!
