Do you have bins full of crayons bits? Have you asked yourself what can you do with old crayons? I know I have! Make this crayon shavings heart craft for Valentines Day!
I have a lot of crayons. Not pristine, new crayons – the old cruddy kind. The gross kind of crayons that have been rattling around in my kid’s pencil cases all school year. I empty out their backpacks the last day of school and toss the half used crayons into a bin. I convince myself I can reuse them, but usually they just sit in the craft closet ignored ad abandoned. Poor, sad little crayon pieces.
I was cleaning out my craft closet this weekend and came across that overflowing crayon bin. Honestly, I felt bad for the crayons. I know it’s weird to feel bad about crayons, but every time I see the I’m reminded of my broken promise. My promise to take them and turn them into something really cool. I picked the bin up and thought about tossing the whole thing in the trash. That would be the quickest way to rid myself of these guilty feelings.
Instead, I remembered that Valentine’s Day is around the corner and I have a house full of super bored kids. This is a great craft that can be made by toddlers (with help) all the way through to teenagers. Kids can get as creative as they want with crayon shaving colors and design. Many of our older children spend a lot of time doing their classwork on iPads and chrome books these days. This craft helps them stretch and use muscles in their hands while they sharpen the crayons and squeeze glue from the bottle! Overall it’s a nice way to combine fine motor skills and creativity.
I hope your kids have fun with this craft! And don’t forget to join in on the crafty fun!
