This past summer we packed up and moved to a new home. Armed with my packing tape and a handful of Sharpies, I began assembling boxes. As I dismantled my children’s rooms, I realized that my babies weren’t babies anymore. Yet, I couldn’t help but notice how many babyish things I had encouraged them to hold on to.
Seeing that this is my third move in 14 years, I knew I had no desire to pack things that were just going to sit in boxes in the basement of my new house. This time I was only bringing what we needed, used daily and loved. That meant a lot of the “stuff” in my kid’s rooms also needed to be donated.
I knew my kids were going to be hesitant about letting go, so I made a deal with them. They were going to be able to decorate their new rooms any way they wanted to. I wanted them to decorate their rooms in a way that reflected their present-day selves. That meant if there was anything they felt was babyish, they could donate it and it wouldn’t hurt my feelings.
Surprisingly, they liked the idea of having control over their bedrooms and our decluttering and packing went smoothly. Whether you have a baby on the way, or a teen – I think these decorating tips will be helpful when planning out your child’s bedroom.

Strong Sturdy Furniture
When we first bought our son’s bedroom furniture, we spent a little more to make sure it would last. I knew the last thing I wanted to be doing was replacing broken bed slats and chipped dressers every 5 years. When buying furniture, don’t look at pieces that your child will “grow out of”, look at pieces that your child will “grow in to.” And make sure it’s sturdy enough to handle bed bouncing, wrestling matches and flying leaps from the dresser to bed. Believe me, boys will be boys and the furniture needs to be strong and sturdy!

Pick a Durable Paint Finish
It doesn’t matter how many times a day you tell your kids to wash their hands, they are still going to be dirty. And the last thing you want to see on those freshly painted walls are handprints, scuff marks and dog slobber – believe me, they will be dirty in a week. Knowing this, you should choose flat paint. Our painter told us it will allow us to easily clean the walls without removing the paint.

Rug or Carpeting
For some reason, I have no idea why – boys are always on the floor. They play on the floor, they read on the floor, they would probably sleep on the floor if given the chance. Whether you prefer carpeting or an area rug in your child’s bedroom, just make sure it is soft and has a lot of padding. I have always opted for stain resistant area rugs for many reasons, but mostly…spills, muddy shoes and middle of the night throwing up.

Artwork They Love
When we were coming up with ideas for my son’s room, he insisted he wanted lion artwork. On my laptop, I pulled up gorgeous photo after photo of lions lounging on the savannah. None of it was what he wanted. He explained that wanted a lion roaring, something really cool. Not the pretty landscape photography I chose. I had to respect that it was his room, and he wanted something he loved. He found the exact photo he was looking for and we had it printed on Canvas On Demand. Lot of Storage
Storage is something you can never have enough of. Anytime you can find a way to incorporate storage into your child’s room, you should. A bench or chest hides the big toys and doubles as seating. A bookshelf can double as a nightstand. Take advantage of the space under the bed, playsets can lay flat and slide underneath or you can fill up shoe boxes with little toys and hide them under the bed.
